GCSE 9 – 1 Grading
Information for Parents
Summer 2017 saw the first phase of the new reformed GCSEs with
9 to 1 grading.
The new qualifications are graded 9-1 instead of A*-G.
Under the new 9 – 1 structure, there are now six different grades from 4 to 9 for the mid to higher ability range as opposed to four in the old system (A*, A, B, C) whereas there will be fewer grades for the lower ability ranges – grades 1 to 3 – compared to previous grades G, F, E and D. This means that there will be greater differentiation between individual students and recognition of exceptional performance in the new, more challenging GCSEs, with fewer students achieving the new grade 9 than currently get A*.
- The bottom of the new grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C. Broadly the same proportion of students will get a grade 4 or above as previously got a grade C or above.
- The bottom of the new grade 7 is aligned to the bottom of grade A. Broadly the same proportion of students will get a grade 7 and above as previously got a grade A and above in the subject.
- The bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G. Broadly the same proportion of students will get a grade 1 or above as previously got a grade G or above.
The Government has defined grade 4 as a ‘standard pass’ and grade 5 as a ‘strong pass’ with both grades being reported in school performance tables. The number of students achieving a ‘strong pass’ will be one of the measures by which schools are judged.
Students achieving a ‘standard pass’ grade 4 or above in English and Maths will not be required to continue studying these subjects post-16. Where employers, FE providers and universities currently accept a grade C they are expected to continue by recognising a grade 4.
