The Wavell School

Culture Day 2025

As part of our vibrant Diversity Week celebrations, students and staff came together to honour all the different cultures that make up our school community during our much-anticipated Culture Day.
The day was a colourful celebration of identity, heritage and belonging. Students proudly wore traditional clothing or outfits that represented their cultural backgrounds or personal identities. From vibrant gurung dresses, saris,  kurtas, asoebi & gele, to national flags and football shirts from around the world, the school hallways came alive with colour.
The assembly programme during Diversity week focussed on the themes of 'calling in and calling out' as part of our We Care to Challenge. Students were encouraged and supported in thinking how they can take this approach in life, not just during their time at The Wavell, and considering how we can apply this philosophy not just every lesson every day, but every second every day. This assembly encouraged students to reflect on how we can hold each other accountable with compassion, and how to speak up against injustice while fostering understanding and growth. It was a meaningful reminder that diversity is not just about celebration, but also about responsibility and allyship.
Another activity invited students to pin their place of birth, heritage, or family origin on a world map display. The map quickly filled with pins from every continent, visually showcasing the incredible diversity within our school. It sparked conversations, curiosity, and pride as students shared stories about their roots and learned more about each other. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the school quad was beautifully decorated with flag bunting representing countries from across the globe. It created a striking visual reminder of the many cultures that make up our school family and set the perfect backdrop for the day’s celebrations.
Diversity week - and Culture Day in particular - was more than just a celebration. It was a meaningful opportunity for students to connect, learn from one another , and take pride in who they are. The week reminded us that our differences don't separate us, they enrich our community and help us grow stronger together.
