Aim of the Mathematics Curriculum
The key aims of Mathematics for all students are to:
- Develop fluency in fundamental mathematical concepts, enabling students to recall and apply knowledge accurately and efficiently.
- Strengthen reasoning skills, encouraging students to follow logical arguments, make connections, and justify their thinking.
- Enhance problem-solving abilities, equipping students to tackle both standard and non-standard problems with confidence and creativity.
- Promote the application of skills in real-world contexts, helping students connect mathematical ideas to everyday life, other subjects, and future careers.
- Foster mathematical resilience and curiosity, so that all learners feel empowered to explore, question, and enjoy the subject.
The knowledge the students will have by the end of the course:
Number: Fluency in calculations with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and powers; understanding place value and estimation.
Algebra: Fluency in forming or simplifying expressions, solving equations, understanding of sequences, graphs and algebraic reasoning.
Ratio and Proportion: Ability to solve problems involving direct and inverse proportion, scale factors and percentage change, including in real-life contexts.
Geometry: Knowledge of properties and ability to problem solve with shapes, angles, transformations, constructions, application of formulae for perimeter, area, volume and trigonometry.
Statistics & Probability: Interpretation and representation of data using charts and averages, understanding of probability.
In addition to topic-specific knowledge, students will be able to:
- Apply mathematical skills to non-standard and multi-step problems.
- Reason mathematically, making connections between topics, justifying methods and conclusions.
- Communicate mathematically, using appropriate notation, tier 3 vocabulary and structure to explain their thinking clearly.
